Lincoln School and A.S. Faust Middle School - Renovations
East Rutherford, NJ
A 46,000 SF addition to the Alfred S. Faust Middle School yielded a new school for incoming 4th graders from nearby McKenzie School and current 5th graders. The new Lincoln School now gives these students their own dedicated spaces, offering 10 general-use classrooms, a special education classroom, occupational and physical therapy room, music and art rooms, STEM and computer labs, and a gymnasium. The renovations to the existing Faust School saw a conversion of the underutilized gym and pool into a cafeteria/multipurpose room with a kitchen to serve meals cooked on campus. A new HVAC system, electric service, and distribution were also be provided, replacing antiquated subgrade transformers below the existing building that could no longer be maintained, thus alleviating the district of a lingering danger to students and faculty. The current BOE offices in the school were moved to the adjacent Annex building, freeing up space for a new STEM lab and lecture space. The media center and science labs were also upgraded, and an elevator and security vestibule were added.
One of the biggest obstacles of the project created the most distinguishing design feature – a walkway bridge that connects the new school to the existing building’s 3rd floor. Via a town ordinance, a section of Grove St. in front of the school was fully vacated to allow the addition to stretch across the street to a vacant lot on the other side. However, underground utilities that had to be accessed periodically prevented the building to be constructed on top of the former street. Thus, the idea of connecting the two sites via a bridge was born. Beneath the bridge now lies a pedestrian walkway with ornate landscaping and artificial turf flanked by an outdoor learning commons. |
