Hudson County Community College - Student Center
Jersey City, NJ
As part of our on-call assignment with Hudson County Community College, Di Cara | Rubino Architects was hired to provide architectural and engineering services for the renovation of 20,000 sf of interior spaces at 81 Sip Avenue to make way for a new student union.
As is the case with most projects, we began with a feasibility study to determine the space and program needs, and a careful review of the existing conditions and mechanical systems was performed. In the end, the new Student Center saw a revamped first floor that includes student lounges, a Welcome Center, full-service café, a Veterans’ Lounge, and security command center. The second-floor houses offices for Student Life, Student Government and a variety of other student organizations, as well as an open lounge and a multipurpose room for events and meetings. Numerous sustainable elements and energy efficient design features were implemented to increase the building’s carbon footprint. In addition, renovations and upgrades to the building included the installation of facade brick to match the adjoining Gabert Library; replacement of the existing roof; the addition of a new entrance vestibule; installation of new HVAC systems, elevators, emergency generator; and a direct, indoor connection to the Gabert Library. Technology amenities such as facility-wide Wi Fi and new computer stations were also made available. |
